The series revolved around the Addams family’s daughter Wednesday. Unlike previous movies, this show looked closely on just her life, problems at new school. It also brought a mythical dark element.

Wednesday was Tim Burton’s representation of a famous family. It raised topics of being an outcast, being different and introverted.

Netflix said “Wednesday now holds the record for most hours viewed in a week for an English-language series on Netflix, with 341.2 MILLION HOURS!”

Ratings are higher than the 4th season of Stranger Things and the Crown. It was a breaking phenomenon in Netflix history.

The show had been highly promoted on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other social media after its release on 23 November.

‘Wednesday dance’ occupies all the recommended pages in TikTok, with ‘Bloody Mary’ by Lady Gaga hitting almost 1 million videos of the character’s dance and its recreation.

What was so special about the show? Why was it so popular among young and even elderly people?

University of Westminster’s students shared their opinion on what made the show so special.

Out of 30 people asked, everybody heard about the show, even though some may have never watched it.

“I think it is popular because of the actors”, Debora Dinkova, 19, student of fashion business management said. “They had the original Wednesday there as well.”

The show cast included Jenna Ortega, Christina Ricci, Gwendoline Christie, which attracted a lot of audience.

“The dance is just everywhere. It is trending,” Laura Penn, 18, fashion business student added.

Dance with ‘Bloody Mary’ song in the background, which actually was improvised by the actress Jenna Ortega, is being recreated in social media, even though the song was never included in the original series.

Lady Gaga tweeted “Slay Wednesday! You are welcome at Haus of Gaga anytime.”

Originality and strange uniqueness were the largest proportion among comments around the dance.

“It is just like a movement. Also, the outfits are very good,” Laura added. “And a lot of people like Tim Burton”.

People are used to seeing the representation of a ‘cool popular girl’ in the Netflix series, when Wednesday Addams, as well as all Adams family, were considered as outsiders, not like everybody else. She was dark and introverted, and it was what attracted people.

“I have seen a lot of the dancing scene,” said Imogen Jolliffe, 21, fashion marketing student.

“Maybe it’s also because of the representation of outcasts,” she added.

“Although I know a girl who thought it was really overhyped,” the student claimed.

However, despite different opinions and reviews around ‘Wednesday’, the record has been reached. It continues to get more views and rewatches in various countries.

That is the unique phenomenon of ‘Wednesday’.
