Behind the Green Screen: a look at visual effects working practices today

Visual effects have become an essential part of filmmaking today, but the artists responsible for creating those effects find themselves underappreciated and undercompensated. Visual effects have been used in films since the inception of cinema, evolving from practical effects like the use of model miniatures and paintings on glass, to the fantastical computer-generated worlds we see in films and TV today. ‘Visual effects’ (or ‘VFX’) is the integration of computer-generated imagery into live action shots. VFX are used to create elements that would otherwise be impossible, expensive or difficult to film in real life, and can be seen in a wide range of movies. Digital artists train for years to be able to work in the visual effects industry, and it takes teams of dozens of arti

Refugee crisis is a pressing problem for modern society, 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from home. According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNCHR), among them there are nearly 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported in March that deaths on the three main Mediterranean Sea routes have already reached 311 individuals. However, numbers do not always shock, they can cause instead unexpected reactions. It's the case of the refugee memorial in Liverpool, a list of more than 30,000 names of people who have died at sea attempting to reach Europe. The list, created by the artist Banu Cennetoğlu to increase a sense of sympathy for these victims, has instead att

Amanda Spielman, the head of The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), has said that some faith schools are “deliberately resisting both British values and the requirements of equalities law.” At the annual Ofsted report Ms Spielman highlighted a worrying number of practices taking place in faith schools. She said that Ofsted inspectors had in some cases found texts which “encouraged domestic violence and the subjection of women”. Ofsted reported that the number of independent schools which were judged to be “less than good” has increased again this year, from 28% to 32%. A proportion of institutions from this category were C

From July 25 to August 12, London hosted the XXX Olympic Games. The event was introduced by local and national authorities as an unmissable opportunity to transform the city. East London was to become a symbol of the city of the future, with affordable homes, open green spaces and sustainable means of transport. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was designed and built in a huge junction between the London Boroughs of Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets. Massive public investments were promised to provide the communities with social, cultural and sporting facilities. An old, traditional and active industrial area was evicted. Following a controversial compulsory purchase, dozens of businesses were forced to leave and hundreds of neighbours were relocated. Around £10bn were spent. Fi

Dancing with robots: a tale of hope and fear

In 1982, Blade Runner pictured a dystopian future settled in LA in 2019 where a private corporation whose motto is 'More human than humans' has created a superior android called Replicant, an improved version of human beings. Replicants are stronger, faster and smarter than humans. They have reached the final step of mankind: they fear the death. They want more life. They have consciousness. The machine has become human. Only one year before 2019, how far are we from this paradigm in real life? Much closer than we think, according to many experts. The flying driverless cars, the genetically-modified food and the permanent acid rain seen in the movie are almost here with us. It is just a matter of years. Technological development is changing the face of the earth. Artificial intelligence...
