The Thrill Of It All: Album Review

Culture, Listen, Music
Sam Smith bares his soul in his second album The Thrill of it all following 2014’s success In The Lonely Hour and his singing debut in Disclosure’s 2012 Money On My Mind hit! Sam is no stranger to soul, pop and even gospel so we expected nothing less from this album. It is even deeper than In The Lonely Hour and that was deep. The album jumps right into Too good at Goodbyes which was the first single to be released from the album and its success paved the way for the upcoming album. The soul-infused track is a piano-led song with harmonious sings from a backing choir as well as Smith’s own poignant voice. It takes you to church and then back to skipping down the road when the beat kicks in. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bag6R4_lruy/?hl=en&taken-by=samsmithworld Some may say S

The historical Andrew’s Café located in Gray’s Inn Road could close in May to make way for an expensive housing development. Andrew’s Café is one of the oldest in Camden with a history of over 70 years and was established before World War 2. Its current owner, Erdogan Garip, faces eviction after 12 years of hard working live running the café. The massive development scheme submitted to Camden Council by the property firm Dukelease, a private company owned by a single family, will demolish lovely heritage buildings and destroy a vibrant and active community which will be replaced by 13 new million-pound flats made of glass, metal and concrete. Unfortunately, Andrew’s Café it is only one of many businesses that will be forced out if the planning application for Panther House and 156-

Be it to help mental health or simply nurture your inner child, adult colouring books may not merely be ‘just another fad’. It’s 6pm on a Thursday evening and the Waterstones bookshop at Piccadilly is abuzz with excitement. A bestselling author is about to launch what experts already know will be another bestselling book, and no, it’s not J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter or E. L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey. The author in question is Mille Marotta, and the book is Wild Savannah: A Colouring Book Adventure. The new book’s predecessors, Animal Kingdom and Tropical Wonderland, were among 2015’s top 10 bestsellers on Amazon, and continue to top the list of most gifted items on the site. And if these aren’t clear enough indicators of the craze that’s gripped the country, new data from a Ne

Rough Sleeping: Stories from the Street

"Come and take a selfie with the homeless." Lee, who prefers to use an alias, vividly remembers the moment when he feared that the men standing just over his head while he slept on the ground would start kicking him. A few weeks before I met Lee, he was one of the many homeless people on the streets of London. The steps of the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square was his home for many months. He is now in the process of rebuilding his life but has not forgotten his experience as a rough sleeper. His story is so lengthy, that battery on my recorder flat-lines and my coffee goes cold before I could finish. https://soundcloud.com/westminster-world/homeless-in-london Many other homeless people have traumatic experiences while trying to survive living on the streets. This can be dama...

A record number of Britons went under knife for beauty in 2015. If you are considering cosmetic surgery, here's what you should know. New data from the British Association of Anesthetic Plastic Surgeons shows the number of cosmetic surgery operations reached a record in 2015, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures - an 13% increase on the year before. The growing popularity of cosmetic surgery reflects the recovering economy and increasing influence from media and celebrity, according to Dr. Nilesh Sojitra, consultant surgeon and member of British Association of Anesthetic Plastic Surgeon (BAAPS). In the past few years, more celebrities are willing to openly talk about their cosmetic operation like Patricia Heaton, who said in Ron Jacobsohn's interview, "my philosophy is, you

Angelica Morrison stands at London’s most expensive toilet. Opened eight months ago in Covent Garden it is a fancy lavatory, owned by the trendy 2theloo Company. But it costs. As Morrison finds out, it is £1 to enter and she had no choice but to pay. Neoliberalism, which turns everything into a business, has reached London’s toilets. Since London’s first toilet, resting areas have moved on to being more than just a place to “relieve one self”. They have turned towards the same direction as the Romans after the introduction of sanitation. According to the British Toilet Association (BTA), over 600 restrooms are believed to have closed down, with another 22 more underway. Raymond Martin, Managing Director of BTA, says the closure has affected the public tremendously. “We have actuall

Next year’s edition of the Brit Awards will see more black and ethnic representation, Brits chairman Ged Doherty has said. Last week’s event received widespread criticism for failing to give black music its due recognition and for ignoring the achievements of black artists. The controversy even led to creation of the Oscar-style hashtag #BritsSoWhite, which was soon trending on social media. But the church is empty. Only a handful of people managed to make it While others need convincing to attend church, Prudence is one of the three in five British adults that goes to church every Sunday, according to an opinion poll by the National Churches Trust. The opinion poll reported 27 per cent of British youth would only visit church gatherings more frequently if they had access to free Wi-Fi.
