The hit song – the singer’s debut since his departure from One Direction – has already raked up combined sales of 112,000 including 4.97 million streams, according to Official Charts Company.

These figures make Pillow Talk the fastest selling track of 2016 thus far.

Malik’s sensual single has knocked last week’s number one – Shawn Mendes’ Stitches – to third place this week. Jonas Blue’s Fastcar, a dance version of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 hit song has taken the second spot.

Pillow Talk is a far bolder song than any of the previous tracks the singer made when part of the sensational pop group One Direction. The erotic video sees Malik and his model girlfriend Gigi Hadid get physically up close and extremely personal. Explicit lyrics and x-rated graphics in deep, sexual hues make a strong statement about the singer’s departure from his earlier bubblegum pop numbers.

The 23-year old artist released the hit single on 29th January 2016 following a Twitter announcement a week prior. He also revealed on social media that the song was about “dirty and raw” sex.

“Everybody has sex, and it’s something people want to hear about,” he told the Sunday Times. “It’s part of everybody’s life, a very big part of life! And you don’t want to sweep it under the carpet. It has to be talked about.”

Malik announced his exit from One Direction in March 2015 on the pretext that he wanted to make “real music”. The young singer then went on to sign with RCA Records as a solo artist.
