Social Media goes into a frenzy as YouTube Rewind gets seven million dislikes

The video is on course to break the record for most disliked on the website

The annual YouTube Rewind was met with negative reactions since it was published on the website. The video which went live on December 6 is at seven million dislikes at the time of writing and has become the second most disliked video on YouTube falling short to Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” However, Bieber’s song which has been disliked 9.7 million times also has 10 million likes. That is, however, not the case for the new Rewind video as it has a drastically low up-vote rate at 1.9 million.

YouTube Rewind 2018

The yearly video highlights music, fashion, movie, gaming and other trends of that specific year while featuring the most subscribed and popular content creators from YouTube. However, this year the criticism has been about it not adhering to the norm. Famous creators like PewDiePie, KSI and Logan Paul did not feature in the video and the trends covered did not define 2018 to the full extent, as per audience reactions.

The comments section of the Rewind video was also full of users complaining about the content. A user MsFluffypants04 said: “This is by far the worst youtube rewind ever in existence.” Another comment by Miguel Perez said: “If there was any time we needed our lord and savior, PewDiePie, we need him to fix the next one.” World’s most subscribed YouTube creator, Felix Kjellberg, also known as Pewdiepie, was one of the highlights of this year because of his competition with Indian Music Channel T-Series for most subscribers.

He did not feature in the Rewind but did publish a reaction video for the same in which he mentioned that it did not highlight key moments of 2018. He also said: “I remember Rewind [used to be] something that seemed like an homage to the creators that year, it was something cool to be a part of. Now it’s like I’m almost glad I’m not in it, because it’s such a cringey video at this point. It’s so disconnected with the community and its creators.”

People were also very active on Twitter about the video. A user HalliePotter tweeted: “I literally don’t know 99% of the people in YouTube Rewind.

Another user, HannaBevs, tweeted: “It really doesn’t feel like rewind nor did it feel like it represented 2018 or YouTube.”

Some comments under Justin Bieber’s song urged other users to take action against Rewind. A comment by a user named Werdna on YouTube said: “Everyone undislike so YouTube rewind 2018 is the most disliked video.” This year’s Rewind is already the most disliked non-music video. Overall, it is now preceded by Jake Paul’s song “It’s Everyday Bro,” the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer and a PewDiePie video.
