Australia has finally set to legalize same-sex marriage. This follows a historic bill that was passed in the House of Representatives.
After 20 failed bills and years of advocacy, the bill to amend Marriage Act was introduced a month ago and only four MPs voted against the bill. Same-sex couples can legally marry from January 2018.
Starting this Saturday, people will be able to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage. This comes three weeks after it was found that 62% of Australians had voted “yes” in the national survey.
Australia’s Governor-General, Peter Cosgrove, is expected to approve the bill over the next few days.
Youtuber Raymond Braun who makes LGBT-centric content tweeted a video of the moment the Australian parliament passed the bill:
Today will go down in history. Marriage equality is finally the law of the land in Australia!
